Lydia's Corner

A place for us to talk about our crazy crafty ideas

New Year January 4, 2012

Happy New Year Jilly’s Closet/Lydia’s Corner fans! We hope you had a fantastic holiday season and created some wonderful new memories.

Dan and I celebrated our first Christmas as a completed family with our beautiful girls. Lydia was hesitant at first when it came to opening presents but once she figured out we were actually letting her touch them, she wanted to open everyones! It was definitely a Christmas to remember.

Mom, Kristin and I spent all of November and most of December baking delicious sugar cookies that we sold at our local Christmas Tree Farm.

I’m not quite sure what the final number was, but I’m pretty sure we sold over 6,000. We are tentatively planning on doing them year round for special orders. Valentine’s Day, Wedding/Baby Showers, Birthdays, etc… Let me know if you are interested in any additional information on the cookies.

Mom and I are trying to figure out what is in the future for Jilly’s Closet. With the new Facebook setup it is proving harder to keep in touch with our fans. Unless you are subscribed to our page our updates will not automatically show up in news feeds (not that we’ve had many updates recently). We are also looking for suggestions on what products our fans would like to see. I will be honest, as much as I would love to be able to make dresses for girls and rompers for boys I just don’t see that happening for the time being. I need a lot of practice in that department and the kiddies don’t allow for much of that. So for right now, I will probably be sticking to things I already know. I of course will try new projects along to road in hopes of fine-tuning my skills.

So, I guess what I am looking for are your thoughts. We really enjoy bringing wonderful products to our fans but we need to hear from them to know what direction we need to head.

It’s getting close September 13, 2011

What is getting close?

Well… Christmas (please refrain from sending hate mail, thanks!). As long as I did not horribly botch my addition skills there are just over 100 days left until Jolly ‘Ol Saint Nick visits all of us while we are snoozing away.  So why am I bringing up this up? Because we have some awesome Christmas Jester Stockings that I think will make your holiday celebrations that much more festive!

Seriously, how CUTE are these?

They are available in 2 sizes. Pictured here are the standard stocking size of 17″ from top to bottom (not including hook) and 11″ from heel to toe.  The next size is a very LARGE stocking that makes great for lavishing goodies on your kiddies (or grand-kiddies), holiday decorating – think door hangings with poinsettias and pine cones – or also for newborn pictures! They are big enough to just slip up to the armpits of your new little bundle of joy which makes for some very adorable pictures . Approximate size of these are 29″ long and 18″ heel to toe. I say approximate because ours are currently packed away and we can not get to them too easily.

Mom is the maker of these stockings and I absolutely LOVE them. Next year our mantel will have 4 of them hanging from it and I look forward to the memories Dan, Lydia, Jillian and I will all start to create. I remember when my sister and I would get up on Christmas morning and dive into these things – we had the large ones! It was always fun to see how many goodies were stashed in there. And you always knew when it was underwear – there is no easy way of disguising those! Anyhoo – I digress.. I meant to say that she hand-makes all of these. They are machine quilted and have stuffing in the bottom to allow for shaping/sturdiness. Little touches of bells and beads are then hand sewn and glued on to finish them. They are very good quality and put anything you could buy at the store to shame (of course, I am biased 🙂 )

  • Standard Size: $28.00
  • Large Size: $38.00

You can order them here.

I’m bringing these wonderful stockings to you early because I want all of you to know that they can be customized to your color/scheme/theme preferences.  Custom orders will of course require more time, so the earlier you order the better!

Ok, ok back to enjoying what is happening now – which is ABSOLUTELY gorgeous weather! I have to say, I am sad to see summer go and the closing of our pool – but this weather means my favorite time of year is right around the corner. I love fall. All the pretty colors. Wearing hooded-sweatshirts with jeans and flip flops (this may be a generational thing…) and of course all of the harvest/Halloween decorations. And let’s not forget about Starkbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte! Yumm! One thing in particular that will forever make this time of year special is that Dan and I will finally be welcoming Jillian into our lives!

What are your favorite things about fall/winter? Are you already singing Christmas songs in your head and drooling over Thanksgiving dinner? No? Just me then.. haha

Alright, thanks for reading!

Good Morning! August 12, 2011

Filed under: General Info — lydiascorner @ 9:42 am

It has been a few days since our last update and I’d like to apologize about that. My sewing machine has decided it needs to be serviced so I have been running back and forth to my parents to finish up 2 dresses. I’m hopeful that the machine only needs to be cleaned out and oiled!

So during the sewing hiatus I am planning on using this time to learn the ins & outs of the Cricut Expression mom and I bought about a mom ago. I have so many ideas for this machine that I am pretty overwhelmed with where I want to start.  I’m hoping that we’ll be able to cut out appliques for any number of things and vinyl wall art to start.

Mom and I have played around with it and we know that it can cut vinyl like butter. It is amazing. Really. My sister and her family recently moved into a new home and their son is having a bit of a obsession with Toy Story. So they decided to decorate his room in Toy Story fashion.  Kristin wanted something to go over the headboard of his bed so we decided to try making his name – what do you think?

I think it turned out great! So would this be something our customers would be interested in purchasing?? Let us know your thoughts!

Okay, so I know none of us really want to think about weather that makes it necessary to wear a hat – but, lets face it. It really is just around the corner (with how fast this year has gone by anyway).  Mom has two new hats available for sale on the website. You can find sizes and pricing info here.

One in particular that I am SO EXCITED about is “Lumpy!”

Lumpy is our new 1-eyed monster – here just in time for fall and Halloween! Isn’t he adorable?! He is available in many colors so if you have a girl monster on your hands, she can have her own Lumpy too 🙂

I think these hats will be a huge hit with the kids!

Anyhoo, my next project is making pillowcase appliques for our daughter’s new big girl bed. While Archer is entranced with Toy Story, Lydia is in awe of Minnie (Mouse, that is). Every morning we have to watch Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. And I do mean every morning. “Minnie” is the first thing out of her mouth when she wakes up. So, my husband and I are going to slowly change her room over to reflect her love of Minnie. I’m starting with her bedding. I’ll be sure to post updates as I get them made – here’s hoping it is not as hard as I keep telling myself it is.

One last thing – I have a few items up in a multi-vender auction over at JOEY Dresses by Amy Rey on Facebook.  She is celebrating getting to 3,500 fans and hosting the auction that will begin tonight (Friday 8/12) at 7 pm CST and end this Sunday (8/14) at 7 CST.  Here is a link to the album of items up for grabs at discounted rates.  Please show Amy Rey some love by liking her page as well as any of the pages whose items you plan to bid on.  Keeping fan pages updated and putting together an auction takes quite a bit of work so it is nice to show them that we appreciate their effort.

*Note: at the time of this posting our items are not up in the auction album. This is due to my own pure slacker-ness. I e-mailed her our items late last night. They’ll be up at some point today 🙂

Okay, that is it for now. Thank you for reading! If you know of someone who would love our items please share our page with them 🙂

Random Tidbits

Helllllo everyone!

We hope you are having a fantastic week. The humidity finally let up and it feels pretty good outside today. I know I can breathe again 🙂

Anyhoo –

Just a few things to touch on today-

  • Shirt Dresses (again)
  • Crochet Hats
  • Crochet Flowers

So I need to say a huge THANK YOU to one of our amazing fans! Michelle Rannells was very generous and donated to my Shirt Dress trial and error process! Her husband cleaned out his closet and we benefited!

That is 14 shirts!! Look at all of the pretty colors too. I am already picturing a dress for the robin’s egg blue one.  Thank you again Michelle – I can’t even begin to tell you how much I appreciate these.

Next up – We would like to reaffirm that all of our crochet hats can be made in colors suitable for boys as well as be adjusted in size to fit an adult! We are not just a “little girl” boutique and some day hope to have boy clothing on here… I’m trying! 🙂 But anyway, check out the top 3 hats here – all made just for your little (or big) guy. This is a picture of Archer – my nephew and mom’s grandson – and Kristin.  He is wearing a camouflage ear flap hat!  And she is wearing a more girly themed ear flap hat! Aren’t they cute?

And last but certainly not least – Crochet Flowers!

Here is Lydia wearing one of our crocheted flowers. It is attached to an alligator clip which makes it incredibly versatile. You can attach them to just your hair, a hat, a headband or even as an accessory on a handbag! The possibilities are really pretty limitless.  They are available in all sorts of colors and 2 sizes! Check them out here.

Okay, that about sums it up for right now. Be sure to enter our giveaway for your choice of a FREE Pillowcase Dress or Crochet Hat! You can find the entry form here.  I will use to draw the lucky  number tonight at 9 pm EDT and will announce the winner via a blog post! Good luck!

Thanks for reading.

Hi everyone!

I hope you are all having a fan-tab-ulous Monday evening! My head is all sorts of racing with things I need to get done. But I wanted to stop in real quick to remind you all that we are stuck at 89 fans on our Facebook fan page – we need to get to 100 to do the drawing for your choice of a FREE Pillowcase Dress or Crochet Hat!! If you could help us out by spreading the word, we would be very thankful.

Also, we will soon be offering pillowcase dresses in sizes 3-8 girls! Yay 🙂 Just give me a few days and I’ll get the sizing chart up on the website with adjusted prices and you’ll be able to order them.

Okay, I’m off to finish up a dress and then work on organizing my coupons. Have a great night everyone!

Here is a picture of cuteness for you

The finished Shirt Dress July 30, 2011

Well, I finally finished the dress. I am pleased with the finished product, but can definitely see room for improvement.

The pattern I managed to make for the sleeve was very very wrong. Mom to the rescue – she was able to give me some tips that allowed me to use it the way it was (which is good because Dan’s shirt is a size small, I did not have any fabric left over).

The tutorial I followed was making this dress for a skinny 3 year old – so the dress was approximately a 2T. Lydia is only 18 months, and not quite fitting into 24 month clothing but I figured it would be okay. She could wear it longer if it were a bit bigger on her. Anyhoo, I had a very difficult time getting my measurements to match what the tutorial said.  That may be due to the fact that I have never made my own pattern? I can not tell you.  You can see in the picture that the middle section of pink fabric is slightly tight on her belly. This is my own fault, I cut the elastic too short.

Here is a view of the back.

All in all, I do like this dress.  At this time I do not think I’ll be offering them on Jilly’s Closet. Perhaps once I get more comfortable coming up with my own patterns, I will attempt this again. If any of you have any links that provide tips in that area, please feel free to share them in the comments below! I’d be very thankful!

So what do you all think of the dress?

What’s next? Well, I think I am going to try to make a “Tie Dress.” I saw one at the 4-H Fair earlier this week and fell in love. I just need to find a lot of neck ties now! I’m also continuing to make the pillowcase dresses.
